Please refer to my blog of February 3, 2019 where I defined Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault as one partner gaining or maintaining power and control over another partner. I explained the different actions may be physical, sexual, emotional, economic or psychological behavior. These damaging actions result in intimidation, coersion, and hurtful actions which are frighting and terrorizing, manipulative, isolating and blaming.
In that blog I defined and explained physical abuse, sexual abuse and economic abuse. In today’s post I will clarify the other two categories which are emotional abuse/ psychological abuse of the survivor, children and others.
PSYCHOLOGICAL/ ABUSE OF SURVIVOR, CHILDREN AND OTHERS
The abuser causes fear through intimidation by threatening physical harm to self, partner, children or partner’s family or friends. Destruction and pets and property can be overwhelming. Forced isolation from family, friends and school/or work are very damaging, also.
Domestic violence not only affects those who are abused, but also has a damaging effect on family member, friends, co-workers other witnesses and the community at large. Children , who grow up witnessing domestic violence are among those seriously affected by this crime. Frequent exposure to violence in the home not only predisposes children to numerous social and physical, problems, but also teaches them that violence is a normal way of life. They therefore have an increasing risk of becoming society’s next generation of victims and abusers. It is important to get domestic violence group help so that your children will not be damaged.
